Unicorn Writers’ Conference is held once a year.
This year they will be having two conferences - one in Rye NY and another in Portland, CT (March 9, 2013).
They offer 1-1 sessions for an additional $40 for an agent or editor to read and then meet with the writer at the conference for 30 min. The agent/editor give honest feedback and suggestions on the material. This is rare and really needed by writers as it isn’t traditional for agents to go into depth about what is wrong about a manuscript.
They also offer query letter workshops and book summary workshops. (for a small fee). All the other workshops are free and you don’t have to sign up in advance.
They target writers in 10 New England states but writers have been coming from all over the US for the conference. Writers are returning EVERY year for this conference.
The purpose of all the workshops is to inform and educate writers on the process of writing, help them improve their skills and learn about how to approach an agent, write a sterling query letter and all the various departments within a publishing company which isn’t covered by other writers conferences.
Advice for writers - network with other writers, share material and barter/ask for honest feedback on your book before you go to a literary agent. Many authors think their book is ready and expect agents to fix their material.
This is a misconception on the part of writers. Meet as many agents as possible at the conference but focus on what agent would understand your book. Look for other published authors in your genre and then hunt for these agents and make appointments (1-1) with them.
